 HDDV Fleet Management Network Project

Backgrounder:

Scientists around the world have reached consensus that human activities are having a discernable impact on the global climate -- the climate is changing.  The use of fossil fuels to generate energy is putting an enormous amount of GHGs into our atmosphere.  Transportation is a large and diverse sub-sector, accounting for about one quarter (26%) of Canada’s 2005 GHG emissions.  The number of Heavy Duty Diesel Vehicles (HDDV’s) used for freight transportation has doubled since 1990.  The pollution emitted by diesel engines contributes greatly to Canada’s air quality problems.  In 2005, emissions from HDDV’s alone contributed 39 Mt to Canada’s total GHG emissions.

BBEMA is currently working on a Heavy Duty Diesel Vechicle (HDDV) Fleet Management Project. Within this project, funded by EcoAction Environment Canada, BBEMA is partnering with local trucking companies and industry groups to encourage the adoption of technologies and management practices that reduce fuel consumption and emissions  Greater use of innovative technologies will allow these companies to reduce emissions of greenhouse gas and other harmful pollutants as well as providing opportunities to realize substantial reductions in fuel consumption and other related trucking related costs.  The project will incorporate the partnership of industry leaders as mentors to aid in educating and motivating private trucking companies in creating their own fleet management programs.

FUEL MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP & TECHNOLOGY SHOWCASE

   Fuel Management Workshop and Showcase.pdf

Fuel Management Workshop and Technology Showcase

The Fuel Management Workshop & Technology Showcase was hosted at Credit Union Place, Summerside, Prince Edward Island on May 8th and was a huge success.  At 8 am the first of the new 2010 trucks rolled in - Volvo, Mack and Peterbilt were set up in the outdoor display area when the rest of the attendees arrived. There was a great mix of companies from PEI as well as participants and presenters from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Quebec and Ontario.

The event comprised of a full day of panel discussions, presentations, and new emission reduction equipment and technology displays which allowed Heavy Diesel Fleet Managers and Company Owners to share their experiences in the implementation of fuel reduction strategies and environmental initiatives. The panel topics included discussions on the importance of reducing idle time and speed, equipment which companies had experimented with or were currently using, and most importantly the benefit of getting your drivers involved in the process and the significance of driver training.

There was also a Technology Showcase portion incorporated into the event to compliment the discussions of the day. This included the display of new 2010 trucks on site and also a driving simulator which could access your driver’s fuel efficiency. Other associated trades were also present and were ready to discuss their fuel related products with interested companies.

The day really gave owners of trucking companies and fleet managers real accounts of what other companies had tried. These mentoring companies which came on their own dime, included Easson’s Transport, Midland Transport, Jeff Bryan Transport, Armour Transportation Systems and J.E.Brown Trucking. These companies provided truthful accounts of real life experiences, information that companies greatly valued and needed before making the decision of implementing costly changes into their businesses. Local companies could relate their own situations whether running two trucks to hundreds from the wide range of experts on the panel.

The biggest factor in relation to the whole fuel management issue was unanimous and repeated itself throughout the length of the day, and this was educating the driver. “As great as technology is, the greatest impact we can make, is to make the driver more efficient. The truck that he drives is just the tool that he uses. It is the operator at the end of the day who is going to decide and control how efficiently he is going to operate the tool.”

We all have to do our part in climate change and reducing emissions, and these trucking companies have shown throughout this project that they are well into this topic already and willing to go the extra mile in reducing their impact on the environment. BBEMA would like to express a big thank you to all those involved in the HDDV Fleet Management Project and would like to note that this project could not have been such a success without the great support of the Trucking Industry itself.

 Airtab® Fuel Savers

The Airtab® fuel saver, a small inexpensive product that can save you 3-6% on your fuel costs and reduce your GHG emissions by as much as 8 metric tons per truck per year.

Airtab® fuel savers are small patented wishbone-shaped aerodynamic vortex generators made of lightweight UV resistant high impact plastic.  They were designed by Aeroserve Technologies Ltd., and are globally distributed by Worldcrest Management Inc.  Both companies are located in Ottawa, Ontario where the Airtab® is also manufactured.

When mounted in a line of 3 per linear foot at the trailing edges of tractors and trailers, Airtab® fuel savers will reduce aerodynamic drag and result in reduced fuel consumption by 3-6%, increased vehicle stability thereby reducing driver fatigue, reducing tire wear through decreased scrubbing and reducing hazardous spray in rain and snow

Check out this 3 min video  http://www.youtube.com/v/f80a9jssUFU&hl=en&fs=1

Airtab® fuel savers are inexpensive and the cost to equip a truck can be off-set within the first 3 months with fuel savings.  On an annual basis, fuel savings alone could total $2700 (3,000ltr X $0.92) per truck, or $270,000.00 per 100 trucks.  Additional benefits would be derived from reduced wear on engines, tires, suspension, and cleaner back doors.

PEI Trucking Industry Goes the Extra Mile

Jamie Reid from MacLean’s Ready Mix Concrete and Trucking Ltd. tries out the driving simulator at JVI while
Yvonne Mallet (Midland Transport Ltd.) and John Dalton (JVI) look on

A fuel efficiency workshop was held by BBEMA and The JVI Provincial Transportation and Safety Academy in December, which representatives from Maclean’s Trucking, JE Brown Trucking, Midland Transport Ltd. and the PEI Trucking Sector Council attended. This workshop not only examined factors which contribute to fuel efficiency but gave a hands on approach by allowing the participants to evaluate their fuel efficiency by using a driving simulator.

BBEMA is also planning to host both a Smart Driver and a Fuel Management workshop through FleetSmart (National Resources Canada) this winter. Plans are also in the works in developing a Fleet Information Day in the spring in which larger trucking companies will mentor smaller ones by sharing advice on fuel management practices including their own experiences in implementing technologies and policies. Various technologies in the trucking sector will also be on display. For more information on these workshops contact the BBEMA office @ 886-3288 or email: projects@bbema.ca

An added significant benefit is a reduction of GHG (CO2) emissions. Assuming that a truck will travel approximately 190,000km per year, and that average fuel consumption at 39.5ltr/100km is 75,050ltr, and that Airtab® fuel savers reduces that consumption by 4% = 3,002ltr, and one litre of diesel produces 2.7kg of CO2, then that represents 8,105kg (or 8 metric tons) of GHG.
