BBEMA's territory is on the south shore of Prince Edward Island, primarily in East Prince. It includes the watersheds of the Dunk, Wilmot and Bradshaw rivers as well as the coastal area around the Bedeque Bay, from Union Corner to Seacow Head, including the City of Summerside and its harbour.
The land mass drained by these rivers is approximately 450 km2 and the total length of the tributaries is 295 kilometres. The average land elevation in the watershed is slightly less than 61 metres, while the maximum exceeds 137 metres.
The bay that has an average depth of 2 metres is dotted by saltmarshes that contribute breeding and migrating habitat for waterfowl and shorebirds. The annual precipitation for this area exceeds 1200 mm per year.
This area is characterized by open areas of rolling terrain with pockets of woodlots and hedgerows. Other habitats in the watershed in addition to coastal wetlands, include freshwater wetlands, freshwater ponds, streams, estuaries, and agricultural land.
This region is characterized by a major urban centre-Summerside and several smaller rural settlements, with a combined population of about 15,000.
